Central Balkan Park: The Old Beech Forests

The Boatin reserve, located within the Central Balkan National Park, protects some of the most extensive and ancient beech forests in Europe. The trail offers a quiet, shaded walk through forest ecology and biodiversity.

Entering the reserve from the village of Divchovoto, the path climbs gently under a canopy of beech trees that average one hundred and fifty years in age. The forest floor is rich in deadwood and mosses, which support a wide variety of fungi and insect life.

The transition through the natural terrain shows the deep link between Bulgarian geography and local history.

Forest Reserves and Ancient Trunks

The trail is narrow and soft, following the natural contours of the mountain slopes. The shade is deep and cool, making it a pleasant walk even in the high summer. The reserve is home to rare woodpeckers and the European brown bear.

The walk is a quiet study in forest preservation, showing how the national park maintains the ecological integrity of these ancient woodlands while allowing visitors to experience the beauty of a pristine European forest.
